Commemorates on:
1 of January
Saint Basil was born in Cappadocia in 330 into a wealthy and Christian family. He started his education in Constantinopole and later went to Athens, the beacon of classical and philosophical enlightenment. He returned to Ceasaria to start leading an ascetic life. He was soon ordained as a Bishop of Ceasaria in Cappadocia and as a supported of the Nicene faction of the Church, he became a very influential theologian and advocate for the Nicene position. He is known for his hard work with the sick and the poor, his monastic life and his focus on community life and prayer. His Greek name is “Αγιος Βασίλειος” and the Orthodox Church celebrates his feast day on January 1.
